Babri Masjid Demolition on December 6, 1992

ON 19th anniversary of demolition of Bari Masjid of Mathura, India a renowned Hindu religious leader Swami Agnivesh join Muslim Protestors and demanded  the rebuilding the Masjid and the arrest of those  Hindu zealots responsible for the demolition of the Masjid particularly leaders of Bhartiaya Janta Party including Lal Krishna Advani who incited the mob to demolish the Masjid. Muslim protestors and their leaders gathered at Jama Masjid, Delhi on Tuesday demanding reconstructing the Masjid that was razed on December 6, 1992.

Swami Agnivesh questioned the veracity of claims made by right wing activists about the birthplace of Lord Ram at the disputed site.

“In Ayodhya itself, priests of more than 27 temples claim Lord Ram was born in their temple. On the other hand, BJP leaders like L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi claim that Lord Ram was born in the precincts of the demolished mosque. Did they see it? Were they witness to the birth of the god? Does Advani have any proof,” said Agnivesh. To this, the hundreds of protestors wearing black bandanas and holding placards resounded with ‘Advani shame, shame’ and ‘Babri Masjid – wahin banegi’.

In a rabble-rousing speech at the protest rally organized near Jama Masjid by Muslim leader and the MLA from Matia Mahal constituency Shoaib Iqbal, Agnivesh called for the arrest of top BJP leaders, including L K Advani, who he alleged incited the mob to demolish the mosque.

Due to Muharram, which coincided with the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition this year, there was a huge crowd at Jama Masjid. Heavy police presence ensured there was no violence though.

Agnivesh said that the issue of propriety of the disputed land is with the Supreme Court and it is their test to set history right. He said BJP leaders like Advani Uma Bharti, and Murli Manohar Joshi should be prosecuted for inciting people to demolish the mosque and right wing organizations like the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh and Bajrang Dal should be banned.

Agnivesh targeted the then prime minister, Narasimha Rao, and alleged that he colluded with the BJP and RSS and helped the perpetrators of the criminal act get away.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MLA Shoaib Iqbal said that both the Congress and BJP were together playing with the sentiments of the Muslims and none of them really intended to take up the cause of the community. “It’s been 19 years since the Babri Masjid demolition took place but no one has been arrested or jailed yet. Why has there been no politician from the leading political parties to stand with us in demand for rebuilding Babri Masjid?” asked Iqbal.
