Ramadan kareem-2

Ramadan Karim

“O you who believe, the fasts have been enjoined upon you as they were enjoined upon those before you, so that you may be God-fearing, For days few in number. However, should any one of you be sick or on a journey, then (he should fast) a number of other days (equal to the missed ones); and those who have the strength, (still, they do not opt for fasting,) on them there is a fidyah (compensation), that is, the feeding of a poor person.  Then whoever does good voluntarily, that is better for him.  However, that you fast is better for you, if you only knew. The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for mankind, and as clear signs that show the right way and distinguish between right and wrong. So those of you who witness the month must fast in it. But the one who is sick, or is on a journey (should fast) as much from other days (as he missed). Allah intends (to provide) ease for you and does not intend (to create) hardship for you. All this is so that you may complete the number (of fasts as prescribed) and proclaim the Takbir of Allah for having guided you, and (so) that you may be grateful.   When My servants ask you about Me, then (tell them that) I am near. I respond to the call of one when he prays to Me; so they should respond to Me, and have faith in Me, so that they may be on the right path. It is made lawful for you, in the nights of fasts, to have sex with your women. They are apparel for you, and you are apparel for them. Allah knows that you have been betraying yourselves, so He relented towards you and pardoned you.  So now you can have sexual intimacy with them and seek what Allah has destined for you and eat and drink until the white thread of the dawn becomes distinct from the black thread; then complete the fast up to the night. But do not have sexual intimacy with them while you are staying in mosques for I‘tikaf. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not go near them. Thus Allah manifests His signs to the people, so that they may be God-fearing. (Al-Quran 3: 183-187)

The largest numbers of Muslims will fast in Canada this year Ramadan to praise, and thank and show of love with Allah (S.T.). Fasting is mandatory with some exceptions (see above mentioned verses of Al-Quran). Ramadan is the biggest news for Muslims. It gives pleasure deep into soul. We can’t say how long Muslims have been observing Ramadan in Canada. However, there is enough evidence of Muslims’ presence in native and aboriginal people. After the departure of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in 632, Muslims spread all over the world, (as instructed by Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), with the message of Islam. There might be few Muslims who were living here in late seventh and eighth centuries who had been fasting.

Another important point to note is that fasting was ordered by Allah in previous Shariah (laws given by Allah through his Messengers).

“O you who believe, the fasts have been enjoined upon you as they were enjoined upon those before you, so that you may be God-fearing.” (Al-Quran 2:183).

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As: The Prophet [Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)]  said to me, “You fast daily all the year and pray every night all the night?” I replied in the affirmative. The Prophet said, “If you keep on doing this, your eyes will become weak and your body will get tired. He who fasts all the year is as he who did not fast at all. The fasting of three days (a month) will be equal to the fasting of the whole year.” I replied, “I have the power for more than this.” The Prophet said, “Then fast like the fasting of David who used to fast on alternate days and would never flee from the battle field, on meeting the enemy.” (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Fasting)

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Messenger of Allah Prophet Muhammad (s. a. w.) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about that. They replied, “This is a good day, the day on which Allah rescued Bani (son of) Israel from their enemy. So, Moses fasted this day.” The Prophet said, “We have more claim over Moses than you.” So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast (on that day).  (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Fasting)

There is no doubt that the largest numbers of Muslims (and strictly adherent of faith; fasting in the month of Ramadan), arrived here in second half of twentieth century as a landed immigrant, family sponsorship and refugee claimants.  However, Canada was just the stop over and temporary transit for USA of many Canadian immigrants before 2001.  After getting immigration document, they were used to cross Canadian border to the US, the world’s longest land border, stretching 8,891 kilometres (5,525 mi). After 9/11, 2001, the situation changed. Majority of them returned back in the Canadian land, and all new immigrants preferred to stay here. Border has toughened, rules have been tightened, and working as an illegal immigrant in USA became more and more difficult.

There is no doubt that Canada is most favorite, likeable, and one of the best places of living in the world.  Allah has bestowed the land with enormous bounties. Three oceans meet our beautiful shores.  It extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. By total area (including its waters), Canada is the second largest country in the world, after Russia. By land area alone, Canada ranks fourth.  Canada’s population density, at 3.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (8.5 /sq mi), is among the lowest in the world.

Canada has consisted of eight distinct forest regions, including extensive boreal forest on the Canadian Shield. Canada has around 31,700 large lakes, more than any other country, containing much of the world’s fresh water.

Allah sent Muslims [Muslim is the noun of verb Islim that means surrender (to God)]  in this part of the world so that they became thankful to Allah and passionately worship  and obedient to Allah (s. t.).  Fasting (Saum) is a great form of worship to train and develop high level of patience, self control and generosity.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Allah said, ‘All the deeds of Adam’s sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.’ Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, ‘I am fasting.’ By Him in Whose Hands my soul is.’ The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.”  (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Fasting)

Narrated Abu Huraira r.a., Allah’s Messenger (s.a.) said, “When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened.”  (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Fasting)

Narrated Sahl: The Prophet said, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to observe fasts?’ They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it.”  (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Fasting)

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet was the most generous amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel visited him, and Gabriel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet used to recite the Holy Qur’an to Gabriel, and when Gabriel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and welfare).  (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Fasting)
